Have a Dose of origami

Anne Lavin recently requested diagrams for a yellow-headed parrot, so I designed one for her. What's more shocking, I actually diagrammed it. (*gasp!*)

Anyway, Dose Magazine, one of Canada's national tabloid newspapers, wanted an origami "holiday ornament". "Something non-traditional," they said. So I sent them the parrot. You can see it in the December 22 issue.

Unfortunately, I accidentally sent an old version of my bio, which makes it seem like Yoshizawa-sensei is still alive...oops!

Bring models to work, leave models in the supermarket, set-up an exhibit at the library.

A Sad Day for Origami

It was reported on the Origami Mailing List that Master Akira Yoshizawa passed away early Monday morning, Japan time. No other details are available at this time.

Master Yoshizawa is considered by many to be the father of modern origami, creating tens of thousands of original designs, and helping to develop the internationally accepted system of symbols used in origami diagrams. I've had the pleasure of meeting Master Yoshizawa on three different continents, and have been a guest at his home. He is an emotional man, quick to share his joys and sorrows. At our first meeting, he was puzzled that I had asked him to autograph an old, beat up book. When I explained that it was my first origami book, given to me by my father when I was 3-years-old, he was so pleased that he jumped up and shook my hand vigorously, beaming all the time. I will always remember him as a man with a huge smile.

As Anne LaVin put it, "We've lost an origami artist. Everyone should go fold something, today."
